.Back to the Basics of Real Bread

Artisan Sourdough Bread in Waynesville, North Carolina

For generations, wheat has been the backbone of this land. It fed families, built communities, and quietly reminded us that good food doesn’t need to be complicated—it needs to be respected.

We bake artisan sourdough bread in Waynesville, NC using natural fermentation, time, and carefully selected flours. Our sourdough lineup includes classic loaves and rotating flavors, made in small batches and shaped by the rhythms of the bakery.

At Farm to Cake, a locally owned bakery in Waynesville, North Carolina, we believe bread should nourish, not just fill. That belief begins with the grain itself.

A wheat berry is complete by design. When it’s milled whole, it carries the bran, the germ, and the endosperm—fiber, natural oils, vitamins, minerals, and flavor. When those parts are stripped away through heavy processing, what remains may be convenient, but it no longer offers the same nourishment or character.

Somewhere along the way, convenience replaced care. Bread became fast, shelf-stable, and forgettable. Full bellies replaced well-fed bodies.

We chose a different path.

At Farm to Cake, we mill organic whole wheat grain fresh in-house for our sandwich loaves, baking bread meant for everyday life—soft, hearty, and deeply satisfying. This is bread built for sandwiches, toast, and family tables, made the way bread was meant to be made.

Alongside our sandwich bread, we bake artisan sourdough using natural fermentation and a blend of fresh-milled whole grains and carefully selected artisan flours. Our sourdough lineup includes classic loaves and rotating flavors, shaped by time, patience, and the rhythms of the bakery.

There’s something grounding about working this way. Just as a farmer knows the feel of fresh soil slipping through their fingers, a baker knows the difference when fresh-milled flour runs through theirs.

This is why we mill our own grain.
This is why we bake with intention.
This is why bread still matters.

Bread may be our foundation, but it isn’t the only thing coming out of our ovens.

Each morning, our pastry cases fill with scratch-made baked goods, prepared fresh for the day ahead. You’ll find hand pies, turnovers, cookies, tarts, Danish pastries, and rotating seasonal treats, along with slices of cake, pie, cheesecake, cream puffs, and éclairs. Everything is made in-house, in small batches, and meant to be enjoyed fresh.

For those stopping in on a busy morning or during a lunch break, we also offer savory grab-and-go breakfast and lunch options—thoughtful, satisfying meals made with the same care as our bread. From quiche and strata to hearty sandwiches built on our fresh-milled organic sandwich bread, these are meals designed to make the most of your time without sacrificing quality.

Whether you’re a local picking up your weekly loaf, grabbing breakfast on the way to work, or a traveler exploring Western North Carolina in search of a memorable bakery in Waynesville, NC, we’re honored to be part of your day.

We invite you to slow down, breathe in the scent of fresh bread, and take something real with you—something made with care, meant to be shared.

About

Farm to Cake Bakery didn’t change overnight. Instead, it evolved—slowly, thoughtfully, and with intention.

For many years, we focused on weddings, events, and life’s biggest celebrations. During that time, we were honored to help mark milestones and special moments. However, as seasons changed and conversations with our customers deepened, we began to realize something important: the food people eat every day matters just as much as the food saved for special occasions.

Because of that realization, our focus shifted.

Today, Farm to Cake Bakery is centered on everyday nourishment. Rather than baking only for milestones, we now bake for daily life—fresh, nourishing foods meant to support your family, your routine, and your well-being. After all, everyday meals deserve the same care, craftsmanship, and intention as celebrations.

As we step into a new year, we are leaning fully into what we love most—and what you’ve been asking for most: really good bread.

Although we’ve loved everything we bake, this year marks a renewed commitment to bread made the right way. Therefore, we are expanding our bread operations and dedicating more time, space, and energy to fresh bread made with real ingredients. Our goal is to grow thoughtfully and, by spring, offer a full, well-rounded bread menu designed for everyday tables.

At the same time, some things remain unchanged.

Our promise has always been—and will continue to be—fresh-milled, thoughtfully made, and baked with care. Because bread should nourish you, not just fill you. Using fresh-milled flour allows us to keep the grain whole, the flavor honest, and the food meaningful.

Just as importantly, we believe baking is a conversation.

So, we want to hear from you. What do you want to see more of? What breads belong at your table? By listening to our community, we can bake food that truly fits into everyday life. In this way, this year is about baking with our community, not just for it.

Because just as there’s no better feeling for a farmer than fresh soil falling through their fingers, there’s nothing more grounding for a baker than fresh-milled flour running through theirs.

That connection—to the land, to real food, and to the people we serve—is at the heart of everything we do.

Ultimately, we invite you to stop in, see what’s coming out of the oven, and be part of what’s ahead. Our bread offerings are growing, our schedule is expanding, and more nourishing, everyday bread is coming this spring.

The Farm to Cake Philosophy

The name “Farm to Cake” holds a special meaning to us. It signifies our deep connection to the Waynesville Farmers Market, which serves as a profound inspiration. Just as farmers find joy in freshly plowed soil, we find our bliss in the gentle sifting of flour through our hands. We take pride in being scratch bakers. Real food for real people, from seed to slice.

We have recently made the decision to stop accepting specialty cake orders. We are pivoting the bakery in a new direction. We will still have a variety of 6-inch cakes available in the bakery in our freezer section. First come first served.

We are at 500 Hazelwood Ave. in Waynesville, NC. Right by the railroad tracks. Our little shop is a little hard to see since we are angled from the street. But we are here and have parking in the back for short trips and pickups.

We are now open from 10:00-4:00. Tuesday-Friday. 10:00-3:00 on Saturday. Closed on Sunday and Monday.

For many years, it has been our joy to create cakes for weddings, birthdays, and life’s most meaningful celebrations. We are truly grateful for every moment we’ve been invited to share. As Farm to Cake moves into its next chapter, we are focusing on fresh-milled breads, pastries, and real food made from scratch. With this change, we are no longer taking custom cake orders. We welcome you to reach out with questions about our breads, pastries, and other offerings — but please note that cake requests are no longer available.
